About

BAİBÜ Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of English Language and Literature was established in 2020 and started to admit students as of the 2024-2025 academic year. It is structured in line with the goals of developing English language skills, providing students with a deep understanding of British culture and other cultures, and creating global awareness. In the globalising world, English is widely used in many fields from trade to diplomatic relations, from tourism to educational institutions and its importance is increasing with increasing communication and travel opportunities. English forms the basis of this department, which is used as a common means of communication in many fields such as education, literature, art, media, science, history, and culture. The department emphasises the importance of the diversity and polyphony of language and literature while contributing to the development of students' critical thinking and analytical skills by providing the opportunity to study and analyse the long tradition of English literature. The programme aims to train English teachers, academics, philologists, translators, scriptwriters, and language specialists who understand the relationship of language with culture and literature, have high communication skills, and are sensitive to the needs of today's world. In addition, our students are offered the opportunity to participate in different academic and cultural experiences through international (Erasmus) and national (Farabi) student exchange programmes.

The vision of the Department of English Language and Literature at BAİBÜ Faculty of Arts and Sciences is to become a distinguished academic center that fosters excellence in education, research, and cultural understanding. By promoting critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural awareness, the department aims to prepare globally competent individuals who can contribute to the advancement of knowledge and society in a rapidly evolving world. In line with this vision, the department’s mission is to provide students with a comprehensive education in English language, literature, and culture, fostering analytical and critical thinking skills through the study of literary traditions, cultural contexts, and linguistic nuances. The department is committed to equipping students with the knowledge and competencies required to excel as professionals in fields such as education, translation, academia, and cultural industries, while promoting ethical values, intercultural understanding, and lifelong learning.

Department Facilities

The program's learning outcomes have been designed in line with the Bologna Process, the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ-Level 6), and FEDEK quality assurance processes. Students who successfully complete this program will be able to explain foundational theoretical and practical knowledge of general literature, literary genres, concepts, and terms; describe the characteristics of English literary genres; and evaluate texts representing these genres in historical, social, cultural, economic, political, and ecological contexts. Moreover, they will acquire the ability to convey knowledge about English literature and culture, discuss the skills necessary for teaching at national and international levels, appreciate diverse cultures, and communicate respectfully in alignment with universal values.

Students will gain competencies in conducting critical analyses of literary and cultural texts using interdisciplinary approaches, utilizing current information technologies and research methods to undertake individual or team projects, and applying the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for English-Turkish and Turkish-English translations.

Additionally, students are offered opportunities to participate in international (Erasmus) and national (Farabi) student exchange programs, enabling them to engage in diverse academic and cultural experiences. The department also supports academic studies by providing access to an extensive collection of English and American literature resources through the university library. The library offers printed and digital materials, access to international academic databases, and specialized spaces for individual or group studies, enhancing the educational and research processes for students.

Graduates of English Language and Literature have the opportunity to pursue a career in a wide range of fields. They can work as English teachers in public and private schools, lecturers in universities, translators in ministries, guides, and managers in the tourism sector, editors in media organisations, freelance translators, literary critics, writers, and editors in the publishing world, advertising and copywriting, hostesses in airlines or foreign trade specialists in the private sector. In addition, graduates who wish to pursue an academic career can pursue master's and doctoral programmes, work in international organisations, take part in cultural and artistic projects, provide language training and consultancy, or create career opportunities for themselves in areas such as creative writing and scriptwriting.
